The most common chemical released if desiccants are burned are acid gases produced when chlorides come into contact with subtances containing hydrogen, should these be burnt alongside one another. This can create hydrochloric gas, which is corrosive. The most notorious are doxins, which form when chlorinated substances in waste are exposed to other organic substances in the waste mix. Among the effects of dioxins are; immune system damage, which is especially likely in children: potential damage to the liver, kidney, and digestive tract; miscarriage and sterility.

Nordic Dry’s research found that there are regulations that govern the burning of chlorides, some but not all of which are listed below.

They include: The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (an international environment treaty).

In these documents Nordic Dry sait it found clear evidence that incinerating chloride base compounds will produce hazardous substances even if the original compound is classed as a non-hazardous compound. It is also clearly noted in the documents that all Best Available Techniques (BAT) should be implemented to remove any components form a waste stream that may cause production of these harmful compounds.

Using BAT means that every effort should be made to reduce the chloride content of the material being disposed of. This can be in the separation of chloride prior to disposal into the domestic waste stream from desiccant bags, or identification on the product label to inform the waste management provider of the chloride content, so it can then be disposed of hazardous waste.
